In 1944, as he considered the personal impact of his prosperity, Steinbeck began The Pearl. ![]() But the public spotlight made him uneasy. After the phenomenal success of The Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck should have enjoyed the fame, the wealth, and the Pulitzer Prize this book brought to him. The Grapes of Wrath (1939) won the Pulitzer Prize. Steinbeck continued writing, relying upon extensive research and his personal observation of the human condition for his stories. It received the California Commonwealth Club's Gold Medal for best novel by a California author. Tortilla Flat (1935) marked the turning point in Steinbeck's literary career. They lived in Pacific Grove where much of the material for Tortilla Flat and Cannery Row was gathered. Steinbeck married his first wife, Carol Henning in 1930. His two subsequent novels, The Pastures of Heaven and To a God Unknown, were also poorly received by the literary world. His first novel, Cup of Gold was published in 1929, but attracted little attention. However, he was unsuccessful in getting any of his writing published and finally returned to California. During this time he worked periodically at various jobs and left Stanford permanently in 1925 to pursue his writing career in New York. First, the study on The Pearl has shown that Juana represents woman’s struggles in the family. Based on the result of analysis of the story, there are four points that can be concluded. Social, cultural, and historical background is the factors that people’s characteristics and build the ideas of feminism. Sociocultural approach is applied to analyze the story, since the problems have close relationship with people and their ideas of feminism. It is done by studying the information and sources which were picked from referential books and studies of Steinbeck’s work. There are two problems that became the basis questions: (1) how is Juana characterized? (2) how is feminism revealed in Juana? To obtain the answers to the two questions above, a library study was carried out. This study is intended to find out feminism in Juana, the secondary character of Steinbeck’s “The Pearl”. ![]()
